So I'm starting to get jealous of all these awesome journal skins and gallery pages with categories on the side that everyone seems to have these days, and I was hoping someone could show me how to do all that fancy stuff. Maybe I'm just being lazy because I don't want to try to research it but I thought it would be a lot easier if people knew how to do this and could help me :) I've been out of the loop for a few years now and don't really know which way is up on this site anymore :P

lol I'm so far out of the loop I don't know where the loop is...or was? and as for the box, well I guess I never had one of those to get out of.....

I look forward to seeing what sort of skin you make for your journal if you ever get ambitious enough to invest the effort. doubt I ever will. too many more important or more interesting things to invest my time in at those rare time when I have any attention to focus and at the same time, time.

I hope all is well with you now, anyhow

Beep boop.

Can't tell if you're talking about just journal CSS or entire front page CSS like mine.

G'luck with it! I hope we both do well with this :3

Folders are made through the + button in the gallery. then you can name them like you name folders on your computer. You can also move them up and down on the side-bar if you want them in a certain order!^_^ Mine is alphabetical!

Journal skins are for subscribers only. But if you want fancy text or whatever for the categories in your journal, first find a text generator. After that, download the text then click on the folder you want to edit and click on "Folder Options." Then click on the Icon tab, add a file then upload your text logo then done!
Violently-Chaotic Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Student General Artist
most of the functions are for the subscription though you can move your things around on the front page by clicking edit on the right corner of your front page.

Unfortunately you can only have journal skins if you have a subscription. :( Believe me I so want one :(

If you'd like, I could help with the coding? It's not that hard. And a lot of it can be found here on dA thanks to our lovely fellow artists/coders.
indigo-moogle Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011
I found this really useful in learning CSS [link] . It helps if you know some HTML first. Don't worry, both are really easy to pick up.

This explains it pretty good: [link]

It helps you make your own customized journal.

Hope that helped!

On my old account when I had premium membership I just looked up tutorials through google and learned css coding that way... then I took a class on it in college since I am going for graphic design. It becomes kinda a must to learn of your going into that field. Its actually quite easy to learn if you find a good enough tutorial. Mostly its just substituting pictures, codes and colors in their proper places to get a desired affect. Just read a few tutorials... start experimenting with a basic journal base code and if anything ask some of your friends who do coding to help give you some tips and tricks if they have any.

You can also make you own journal skin, I have no idea how to do that, sorry...
CarbonCopy45 Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
Journal skins: You've got a premium membership already, so just search journal skins and find one you like. Then under it, there should be a download button(right under the preview of it) click and go check it out with your journals.

Gallery folders: Hmmm... I sorted mine in the pervious verson of dA... I have no idea what it looks like now to start out making folders. Let's try anyhow. As I have it now, on the side there's a button that says add folders under my current ones, so once you get started just click that after you get the first one started. As for the first one, there should be a button on your galleray page on the bar that is next to the submit art button in it(i'm not refering to the bar at the very top of the page. I mean the one directly under the gallery tab.) Click it and you should be able to start adding folders. (should say Edit Gallery or something along those lines)

Adding to the folders: You can do two things. Copy or Move. Copying is what it says. it'll make a copy of your deviation and add it to the folder. Your deviation will show up on both the featured folder and the folder you just copied it to. Moving is also as it says. It moves it, all of it. Once you move your deviation, it will no longer show up in the featured folder and reside within the folder of your choice. You can always move it back to the featued folder or another folder by going to it and selecting the little button with a pencil the appears next to your deviation whern you hover over it.(that will bting down a menu with Move To, Copy To and Remove From This Folder)

Hope that helps.. this long and drawn out message lol

Coding isn't something we can suddenly tell you about. It pretty much has the same applications from web design.
RabiesGirl Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Hobbyist Digital Artist
oh oh hang on I got something.

I used this [link]

um. what I did however was make three pictures (actually just white space with text saying header or something, you cans see them in my scraps.) but this was to test how big the picture needed to be. played with the coding. and it took me about an hour or so to get a beginner skin :/ however I think patterns are better because then if someone on a wide screen is looking at it the picture was to small and didnt fit the whole journal. but there is a code to repeat the image... I just dont know it! also what I did was take a skin that my friend made (I asked first of course!) and played with it. I mean, I payed for more things to do, may as well DO them before my time runs outXD

What IWillFly said is correct about the gallery as for journal skins its simple if you have a premium membership just type Journal Skins into the search bar here on da and once you find one you like on the deviation for the journal skin there should be an option that lets you instal the journal skin and when you write a journal there should be a button called journal skins then you just chose the skin you want and click it then start your journal
narutokunobessed Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Student General Artist
Journal coding? What i did to design my stuff is read alot of the tutorials under stock and resources section of DA.

You need to know CSS and HTML coding.

Example of a DA journal.

For the new ones, probably same applies, but you probably need to read up on the updates.

The main thing is to study up the coding, CSS and HTML. Then pretty much the graphics and layouts will flow naturally.
AniDrewit Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Hobbyist Filmographer
You could start by installing a premade journal skin and then tweak the CSS code a bit to see what changes (or learn CSS yourself). You can find Journal Skins in their own categories of dA under "deviantART related > deviantART Skins & Scripts > Journal & Gallery Skins".

i have no clue how but haha TMNT 3
IWillFly Featured By Owner Dec 11, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
I have no clue, the gallery thing there should be a button that says add folder and then you can name it and inside the folder there's options about a folder icon and skin for the inside of the folder, but journals I have no clue. You can probably look up some simple tutorials here on DA?
